Private messaging
Private messaging on Whyvo
Your one-to-one chats, group chats and Circles are end-to-end encrypted. The server stores ciphertext it cannot read, and only the devices in the conversation hold the keys.
What end-to-end encrypted means here
Messages are encrypted on your device and decrypted on the devices of the people you are talking to. Whyvo cannot read them, and neither can anyone who obtains the stored data.
- Each conversation has its own keys, held on the devices in it.
- A message that cannot be decrypted is shown as unopenable rather than guessed at.
- Previews, link cards and notification text are sealed too, so what reaches your lock screen is readable by your phone and not by the server.
Everyday messaging
- Replies, edits within a time window, forwarding and reactions.
- Starred messages, gathered on one page across chats, groups and channels.
- Search inside a conversation.
- Message yourself — a private notepad in your own chat list, like any good messenger.
Control over a conversation
- Disappearing messages: set a timer and older messages go.
- Chat Lock: a locked chat is hidden from the list and asks for device authentication before it opens.
- Block, report and mute, per person and per conversation.
Your history, on your devices
Signing in on another device brings your history with you, automatically.
- History moves between your own devices without a prompt or a manual step.
- A sealed backup means a new device can restore even when your other devices are asleep.
- The backup is encrypted with a key derived on your device, not held by the server.
